Mikael Ahlund becomes Gustavianum’s new Director


Uppsala University has appointed Assistant Professor Mikael Ahlund as new Director for Gustavianum, Uppsala University Museum. Ahlund has a background from, among other museums, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. In recent years he has been Deputy Director for Gustavianum as well as holding the office of University Antiquarian. The current Director for Gustavianum, Marika Hedin, will take up the post as CEO for Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.

During 2018 Gustavianum had over 90.000 visitors to the operations in Uppsala, and 268.000 visitors to the international travelling exhibitions. During 2019 the museum is preparing for a renovation of the main museum building, which is estimated to be completed in 2021. On October 1, 2019, the museum closes to the public.

– It has been a great joy to be responsible for Gustavianum these past five years, says Marika Hedin. I have done much of this work together with Mikael, as we for all practical purposes have shared the leadership between us.

– I am very happy to be able to continue working with developing Gustavianum, says Mikael Ahlund. We are part of a world-class university, our building is fantastic and our collections have an outstanding international potential.

Mikael Ahlund will assume the post as Museum Director on March 1, 2019.
